My Story

In 2003 I gave birth to our second child, Emma. She was born only 13 and a half months after our first child. Although we love her very much, she was a surprise for us. With our son only four months old, I found myself once again going through all the pregnancy ups and downs. Only this time, it was more downs. I wasn’t ready for another child, and found myself starting to slip into depression.

I loved my son so much and thought that once Emma was born, I would feel the same way. However, after giving birth to her I felt the symptoms of depression begin to deepen. I was scared and ashamed of the way I felt, so I went to my OBGYN and he put me on Zoloft, an SSRI used to balance the serotonin levels of the brain. I took it for a few months and when I felt better I stopped taking it. I thought that my depression was over but a few months later I found my life spinning out of control. I was getting worse.

This time I went to a counselor who, after diagnosing me with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) prescribed me Lexapro, another SSRI. This medication did not seem to help me at all. I still felt depressed and experienced a number of side effects that made my life and my family’s lives miserable. So I decided to do some research on depression. I was amazed at what I found out.

Did you know that there is a vitamin that does the exact same thing as an SSRI? It’s called Inositol. It’s not exactly a vitamin but you can read about an important study on Inositol here. I was starting to get really excited thinking that there was a natural remedy for my depression. Only I didn’t stop there. I kept going and I found that there was another remedy for my depression:  Magnesium! I did some reading on both of these remedies and could not find a reason not to take either, so I decided to take both. I just had to find the actual products. I learned that by taking them in powder form rather than by pill your body can absorb the maximum amounts. So I called my local vitamin store and asked about powder forms of Inositol and Magnesium. The Inositol they had was only in pill form, which I concluded to be better than nothing, but the Magnesium she recommended to me was Peter Gillham Natural Calm. It’s been two and a half years since I’ve been taking the two. I’ve tried stopping to see if I’m “cured”, and within a couple of days I can feel the old symptoms starting to creep back. I get back on them and within a day, I feel better.

The great thing about both of them is that they don’t just help with Depression. Peter Gillham has some wonderful newsletters that I wish the whole world knew about. My hope is that you will not dismiss this. If you are going through the same things that I've endured, know that there is a safe and natural way to feel better. Give it a chance, and see how you feel. I know I'm gald that I did.
